Wood is one of the most intrinsically valuable building materials on the planet. Human beings have a relationship with wood that extends as far back as our relationship with fire. It has a longer, richer history than virtually any other substance except water.
Wood was once so abundant that it was commonly burned or left to rot, rather than re-used or recycled. In the 1990’s, it became clear that the old growth forests of the planet were indeed a finite resource, and that the high quality wood that come from those living trees is actually not a renewable resource, at least not in the scale of a human lifetime. The old wood contained in aging structures began to be saved and re-used, perceptions changed and an industry was born.
Today, as the old growth forests give way to monoculture plantations, some of the best wood on the market comes from reclaimed sources. The Elemental Republic team has been at the forefront of this movement for almost three decades. We are continually amazed and inspired by the treasures we find. Flooring decking siding, paneling, beams and timbers can all be sourced from high-quality, reclaimed wood without cutting a single tree.
